About EgyptAir

EgyptAir has an IATA code of MS and is the national carrier of Egypt with their main hub in Cairo, Egypt. They are fully owned by the Egyptian Government and Egypt Air’s main operations is at Cairo International Airport, Egypt (IATA Code CAI).

On the 07th June 1932 EgyptAir commenced operations, back then they were known as Misr Airwork with a start-up of EGP20,000 they operated their first flight from Cairo to Alexandria using a Havilland DH.84 Dragon carrying a maximum of 10 passengers. By August of that year EgyptAir had increased their frequency on the Cairo to Alexandria route to twice daily. Later the same year a twice-weekly Cairo–Aswan flight that stopped at Asyut and Luxor was inaugurated. Before the end of the decade Egypt Air were flying internationally around the region from Cairo to Port Said in Sudan, Cairo to Larnaca in Cyprus and even from Cairo to Baghdad in Iraq, and to what is now Tel Aviv in Israel.

Expansion continued with more aircraft joining the now named Egypt Air’s fleet and in February of 1958 what was then known as Misr Airwork was renamed United Arab Airlines.
United Arab Airlines was formed by the governments of Egypt and Syria that combined their routes and fleets.

Expansion continued at a rapid pace and by 1961 they had started flying routes such as Cairo to Belgrade and Prague, Cairo to Rome and London, Cairo to Jeddah and Cairo to Khartoum. In 1961 the Syrian Government decided to create their own airline and separated from the United Arab Airlines network.

During the 1960’s expansion of United Arab Airlines continued with routes from Egypt to Europe, Egypt to Asia and India. In 1971 the country of Egypt changed their name to the Arab Republic of Egypt and as a result they rebranded the Airline in its current name of EgyptAir. With their inaugural service as Misr Airwork counted EgyptAir would be the 7th oldest airline in the world.

In 2002 the government of Egypt undertook a major initiative to do a corporate overhaul of the airline. The airline was given the right to operate without interference from the government and to do so without the financial duties or backing. EgyptAir now wholly owns EgyptAir Express and Air Sinai. They also have a 60% stake in Air Cairo and 20% stake in the Smart Aviation Company.

In 2004 Egypt Air was the first airline in Africa to receive IOSA certification for safety. As EgyptAir had been purchasing aircraft throughout the years under the government's backing they had acquired considerable assets and by 2007 these were valued at US$3.8 billion.

By 2009 Egypt Air moved their operations in Cairo to the newly built terminal 3 so that they along with their other Star Alliance members could come together under one roof. EgyptAir had joined the Star Alliance Network the previous year and was the 21st member to join the alliance. In 2010 EgyptAir moved their Alexandria operations to the brand new airport in the city called Borg El Arab Airport (IATA code HBE).

In January of 2011 Egypt underwent a revolution and as a result Egypt Air lost an estimated 1.3 billion Egyptian pounds, or around USD $185 million. This was mainly due to increased fuel prices and the devaluation of the Egyptian Pound. SInce the uprising Egypt Air has reported to have lost up to USD$1 billion.

Currently EgyptAir flies to 75 destinations in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Currently they have 52 aircraft in service and in October 2016 they placed a firm order for eight Boeing 737-800s with deliveries starting from February 2017. Egypt Air Enjoy the Sky.
